It has been often noted that there are as many bars as there are churches in Troy. And there are a lot of churches in Troy. During the early 1800's there was sufficient interest in and capital available for the construction of houses of worship.

It cannot but be pleasing to the friends of religion to notice the ardour for erecting convenient places of public worship which at present actuates the citizens of this flourishing village. This ardour is not confined to any particular sect or class of worshippers, but seems equally diffused through all classes; which will plainly show itself in their liberal subscriptions for the erection of churches... convenient places seems to have meant within a block or two from my house, judging from the present-day display of steeples and crosses.
