Alternative Dispute Resolution

Community Dispute Settlement of Troy Area United Ministries is part of a network of mediation centers located throughout the state of New York. A mediation session is a meeting among individuals in conflict. an especially trained, neutral third party, known as a "mediator" facilitates the meeting and assists the disputing parties in reaching a mutually acceptable agreement or solution to their problem. In addition to providing mediation services, workshops in conflict-resolution education and peer mediation in schools; anger management, communication and negotiation skills are also available at low, and in some instances, no cost to the community.

Funded in part by New York Unified Court System, the United Way of Northeastern New York and other private and public funding sources, Community Dispute Settlement is a unique resource to the City of Troy and the County. Since 1979, volunteer mediators have been helping resolve disputes between neighbors, landlords/tenants, consumers/merchants, employers/employees, friends and families. This year, Community Dispute was selected to receive expansion funds from the Third Judicial District to provide specialized mediations in the family Court. Issues dealing with shared renting, custody and visitation are mediated either at the time of a petitioner's hearing before a judge, or may be scheduled for another time and location at everyone's convenience. Divorce mediation, in cooperation with local attorneys, financial advisors and therapists, is also available. In addition to this specialized form of mediation, Community Dispute offers a Diversion Program which seeks to keep teens out of the Criminal Justice System.

In cooperation with New York State Dispute Resolution Association, mediation is offered in areas of special education, mobile home habitability disputes, early intervention provider services and, through the New York State Attorney General's office, new/used car Lemon Law Arbitration. All mediation/arbitration services, with the exception of divorce mediation are offered at no cost to the community.

Please call Dawn Wallant, Program Director, at 274-5920, if you would like more information about mediation, workshops, or would like to schedule a mediation appointment. We are located at 17 First Street, Troy.
