What a difference a tree makes! by Pat Cole Thanks to Community Gardens and staff person Sharon DiLorenzo, I was fortunate to get a tree for the front of my house. This little tree has had a wonderful impact on a street that had more than its share of problems last year. There are a large number of children in our neighborhood and many of them have become interested in the tree, asking such questions as "What kind is it? Will it grow tall? Can I help water it? Given the interest generated by the tree, I asked Mrs. Claire Davis from "Troy-in-Bloom" to give us some flowers to help make Columbus Square Monument prettier and less barren looking. Well, lo and behold, the "urban gardeners", as I call the group that ranges in age from 6 to 14 years old, helped plant the flowers on Memorial Day and now they have taken on the responsibility of watering the flowers, using makeshift watering cans. Now whenever I am in my side yard, these gardeners arrive in droves, helping plant, clean-up, mow the lawn, or just hang out. What a difference from the time not so long ago when they were running amok in the streets and on the sidewalks. Thank you again for helping to make Fifth Avenue a better place to live!
