Troy's Community Newsletter

Prospect Park

The voice of the Friends of Prospect Park has not been heard in this newsletter since May; however, that does not mean our activities have ceased. Quite the contrary. The City Administration has given our efforts to rehabilitate Prospect Park much encouragement by earmarking $85,000 of Community Development Block Grant money for two projects: rebuilding the wall and entrance way and improving the playground. Deputy Mayor Conroy assured us that the Administration is expecting active participation on the part of "Friends." Implementation of the projects is targeted to start in the spring of next year. Peter Grimm heads the task force for rebuilding the wall and entrance to the park. Persons who are knowledgeable or have ideas on this project please contact Peter at 273-1500. Paul Macari leads the playground task force. Paul is looking for input from parents of children from toddler to early teens. Here is a wonderful opportunity to help build a fun place to take your children within one of our city parks. Please let us hear from you. The city plans to undertake both projects in house. These groups will work closely with Ted Keefe, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation.

Most currently, the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Department has provided crews to do community work. They have painted railings and have done some clean up. Department of Parks & Recreation's part-time workers have mowed the grass and repaired cracks in the tennis courts. Also the bathrooms are open during park hours and locked every evening. The water bubbler by the tennis courts has been repaired. This was much appreciated during the two recent Troy tennis tournaments.

Yes, the Troy Tennis Association has taken the first steps in becoming a presence in the Capital District tennis scene. It had been very active 15-20 years ago. John McEnroe played on the Troy courts! This year's tournament began with an adult open tournament and our local celebrity for the Mayor's Cup was Mayor Mark Pattison himself. In July, a Junior Tennis Tournament for players eighteen years and younger was held. Tom Rogan, a member of the HVCC faculty was the tournament director. Tom is planning a centennial tournament in September. The qualification is that the total age of the team has to reach 100!

Mark September 27th on your calendars for a historic walking tour through Prospect Park. Besides acquainting you with this wonderful Troy heritage, the walk will also be a modest fund raiser for the Friends of Prospect Park. Rosemarie Oathout is in charge of this project. Naturally we hope for a strong community participation for the annual fall leaf raking and clean-up targeted for the middle of October. Meanwhile enjoy the Park for a nice walk or a game of tennis. Bring the kids to the play ground or wading pools and enjoy an old fashioned cook out. For more details call 273-4984
