Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Local Organic Vegetable Farm Starts CSA to brings the Community to the Farm

Have you ever wished your vegetables didn't look as if they'd never actually been in the dirt? Or wondered how far they traveled across the world to get to you? Have you ever driven past a rustic farm, and wondered what life was like there?

A new type of small farm is springing up all over the country to help consumers connect to local farmers. It's called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and it is simply a group of consumers teaming up with a farmer who produces vegetables for them. The consumers become "shareholders" in the farm's harvest. They pay in the Spring, then receive fresh, locally produced, organic vegetables throughout the growing season, which here in the Hudson-Mohawk Region, means from early June ætill the end of October But the benefits are not only fresh vegetables! Shareholders in the CSA can become involved in the farm... They can attend farm events, bring their kids to learn about where food comes from, and even help out on the farm, if they're so inclined! What does the farmer get out of this? A secure direct market that frees him or her up to concentrate on growing beautiful vegetables, rather than worrying about who will buy the next tomato. It's a win-win situation!

The farm is only 10 minutes from Troy, so visiting once a week to pick up a bag of fresh vegetables won't be any problem! The CSA garden will start with only 30 shareholders this season, and there's still time to sign up! Call Liz Callan, the CSA gardener, at 272-7069 or e-mail lizbrian@juno.com
