Happy Anniversary Friends Of Prospect Park

by Hannelore Wilfert

Spring is in the air, Easter not far away and the incorporation of The Friends of Prospect Park is one year old. What do our activities for the coming spring and summer look like? First, vice-president, Peter Grimm, selected Saturday, April 18 with rain date of April 25 for the annual clean-up of the Park. As it turns out this date is also earmarked by the City for the city-wide environmental awareness and clean-up date.

Please be a part of our efforts. Because the leaves dropped late and the snow fell early, there are LOTS of leaves to be raked. Mark your calendar for the dates; have work gloves and rakes and come to the comfort station in Prospect Park by 9 a.m. If another time is more convenient for you or your organization please call Peter at 273-1500.

Recently, Hannelore Wilfert, President and Rosemary Oathout, Secretary met with the City's Parks & Recreation Committee to present plans that TAP developed for The Friends. The plans include the installation & new location of the new playground equipment puchased with 1997 CDBG Funds. Under discussion is making the tennis courts and the lavatories handicapped accessible. Our over all goal is to make the Park more pedestrian friendly by reconfiguring. Chico Christopher of TAP presented drawings to the Committee on how these changes could work. Finally, a former access road on the western slope of the Park is to be re-activated as a walkway to the Park from Congress Street. We will need volunteers to clear small brush and help clean up the area. Parks & Recreation Committee Chairman LaPosta received the presentation with warm interest.

Last fall The Friends, Cornell Co-operative Extension and the City of Troy applied for a grant through the Environmental Bond Act, Clean Air, Clean Water. The plan is to develop walks and hiking trails, beginning on the slopes of Prospect Park through the Poestenkill Gorge to Mt. Ida Lake and Beldon Pond. We are very excited about the news that this matching grant has been approved. The prospect to develop a large recreation area that will be attractive to Troy residents and tourists is very exciting. We also need to raise matching funds to receive the grant. Those can be monetary or in the value of service, voluntary or otherwise. Please join The Friends, any interest or level of involvement is welcomed and appreciated.

Mark you calendar for our biggest effort yet! Our first fund raiser is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 in PROSPECT PARK. Our fund raising effort will be the start up function to the annual River Front Festival by the RCCA. You certainly will hear more about this large undertaking in future publications.

Working closely with The Friends is the TROY TENNIS ASSOCIATION whose summer activities all take place in Prospect Park. Our weekly programs for men and women begin the first week in May. Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9am are women's doubles plays; Monday night, 6pm is the men's doubles group. Wednesday night, 6pm are mixed doubles or singles. The group leaders of all TTA programs maintain participants and scoring records. We also have a singles ladder program.

Finally, several tennis tournaments are scheduled below so mark your calendars.
