Information About T.A.U.M. Programs

Troy Area United Ministries - 17 First Street - 274-5920

COMMUNITY DISPUTE SETTLEMENT(CDS) provides community mediation for housing, neighbor, consumer and family conflicts. CDS offers training in conflict resolution by working in schools, in neighborhoods and residential homes, the jail, with youth and adults. Dawn Wallant, Janet Sarjeant-Aase and Mary Hall staff this Program. Phone Dawn at 274-5920 ext. 205 for information. T.A.U.M. is in contract with NYS Unified System to provide mediation services to Rensselaer County.

THE DAMIEN CENTER OF TROY is a living room hospitality center for persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Volunteers make guests feel comfortable and at home. Church and community groups provide monthly meals. For information

on meals or becoming a trained volunteer, phone Coordinator Judith Moyer at 270-9170.

CAMPUS MINISTRY supports Protestant ministry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Russell Sage College. Bible study, worship, pastoral services, group discussions, and opportunities for community service are offered. Churches provide desserts to students at exam times and are involved in other student related events and activities. The Rev. Paul Fraser is Campus Minister. Phone 276-2297.

NURSING HOME MINISTRY Coordinator Howard Billings schedules worship services and special events for six area nursing homes. Local pastors and lay readers provide the regular worship services. Phone Mr. Billings at 273-9075.

MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMITTEE plans and carries out the annual Celebration of the life and the dream of Dr. King, held each January. The Committee also holds local forums and special efforts in race relations and community issues.

THE FURNITURE PROGRAM provides good used donated furniture to families in need. Phone Roger Maher, Jr. 274-5920 ext. 204 to contribute furniture. Also phone Roger if your group can do a volunteer day of collecting furniture.

JOSEPH'S HOUSE WEEKEND MEALS are provided by church groups and local organizations. Anne Fairbanks coordinates this program for this shelter for the homeless in Troy. Phone Andy Chase at Joseph's House at 272-2544 for information.

CROP WALK is a national effort for hunger and disaster relief. T.A.U.M. coordinates the annual Walk in Rensselaer County. 25% of the contributions are distributed among local food pantries and shelters; 75% provide for the hungry and victims of disasters nationwide and worldwide through Church World Service.

A DAILY PRAYER VIGIL is observed by church people for public officials. Contact Margaret Stoner at the T.A.U.M. Office, 274-5920 ext. 202 for information.
