Friends of Prospect Park by Hannelore Wilfert, President We held our first, very successful fund raiser on June 18 in Prospect Park. The money realized will become part of a fund for repairing and rehabilitating the pool in Prospect Park. Since the projected cost is about one half million dollars, the pool won't be ready until next year. But by the millennium, we hope we can "dunk" some important people there. Friends are also selling attractive plaques for trees in the Park. Cost $5 toward a fund for tree replanting. We will also launch an "Adopt-a-Tree" program in the late summer. One will "buy" a Park tree for oneself as an adoptive parent or perhaps in memory of someone. Friends will provide a list of suggested trees, their prices and the sum for maintenance. Brochures on this project will be available by late summer. We also hope that the proposed development of a trail from the Park to the Poestenkill Gorge, across it via a new bridge, up the south side and on to Belden Pond will be underway soon. Friends, in collaboration with the City and Cornell Extension Service were the successful applicants in an Environmental Bond Act grant for 1997. There will be many good things coming to the Park. In the meantime, visit the Park often; enjoy its increased pedestrian area, the splendid views west and south, and the fine new playground equipment. Anyone interested in working with Friends and becoming a member of an effective group, call 273 - 4984. In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
