Troy's Community Newsletter

Connecting Coast-to-Coast

TUI on the Web . . .

TUI has been working with Barry B. Floyd of the Uncle Sam Home Page Project for the last year and a half to help connect the community through the Internet. On the heels of a new web page layout, TUI received the following e-mail:

It's just me, JoAnn Walker from San Diego. I was born in Troy and dragged with my parents kicking and screaming when I was 14 to Southern California. What do I miss most? It is Charlie's Hot Dogs on either River Street or Congress Street. They are my best recollection of home besides Oakwood Cemetary (even as a child I thought that place was lovely). Now I hear it is Famous Lunch or something. Well, we have those same hotdogs here . . .skin and all the same great flavor . . sadly, no sauce. How and if can I order some of that? It's been since 1959 and I sure need a gallon! It's been so long . . . can you help me out here?

Our response soon followed:

JoAnn,

Your message has been heard! My name is Clem and together with my wife Janette and many volunteers we publish a monthly newsletter (Troy United Newsletter) all about Troy. You must have seen the on-line version from Uncle-Sams-Home Page.

I was excited to read your message about Troy. Our organization is called Troy United Ink (TUI) and one of our goals is to connect people in our city through information. I guess you have extended our boundaries.

One of us will contact Famous Lunch to try and arrange for the sauce to be sent out to you. We will need your address. I'm sure they would be more than happy to say they have customers coast-to-coast!

Thanks for the opportunity to help you out. I'll look forward to hearing from you.

This demonstrates the power and benefit of a working Internet site which is maintained and operated for community purposes. Our communication possibilities have only just begun. At this point, many visitors to the site are from outside of Troy. We are looking to get more local involvement to the benefit of businesses, organizations, and citizens alike. When you consider that an old friend of Troy, JoAnn from San Diego California, who hasn't been here since 1959 may soon get some local "hot-dog sauce" … the possibilities are endless!

(We contacted Famous Lunch and found out that you can get their famous "ZIPPY SAUCE HOT DOG SAUCE" by contacting them at 272-9481 or visiting their shop at 111 Congress Street. Pint $2.50, Quart $4.25, Half Gallon $7.00, Gallon $13.50 plus shipping & handling.)
