Weed and Seed Update Jeff Anderson - 270-2900 Thank you for filling out the needs assessment instrument that is an element in our Weed and Seed planning. In addition to the copies produced by Troy United Ink, the Resident Empowerment Action Council of Troy, Inc. (REACT) lent us its spring survey of Troy Housing Authority residents. As you are aware, the county plans to apply for a federal "Weed and Seed" project in November. The first site selected for the program is the area that encompasses tile Downtown and North/Central sections of Troy. The City of Troy is committed to the project. Subsequent sites will involve other sections of the county. An approved Weed and Seed project incorporates elements of vigorous law enforcement, community oriented policing, neighborhood restoration, and relocation of services to targeted areas. Although official recognition carries with it substantial federal funding, the project will succeed if it responds to the needs of the community and develops a solid base of local support. Additionally, earlier Weed and -Seed sites have attracted considerable new revenues. Already, the proposed application has created new enthusiasm from the neighborhoods of North/Central to the merchants of downtown Troy and from both city and county officials. Continuing through September, we will be looking for information on community needs and recruiting people to help plan our initial strategy in the fall and implement the resulting program during the next few coming years. Please contact the County Executive's office if there is specific information that you need about the planning process, if you have suggestions on how you might better participate or if you have information that would move the project forward. In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
