T'ai Chi at the Troy YWCA Beth's T'ai Chi and Chi Gong teachers include Thomas Tunney (of Saratoga NY), Master Yang Zhenduo of China (son of Yang Chengfu who brought t'ai chi to the West), and Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming (now living in Boston. She is committed to helping others recover from illness and to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through Yoga and T'ai Chi/Chi Gong practice. After a decade of ill health, Beth recovered with vitamin therapy and T'ai Chi practice. T'ai Chi, a 300 year old Chinese martial art, is now taught mostly for health purposes. We do the Yang Family Tradition Style Long Form as taught by Master Yang Zhenduo in China. Classes include centering, a thoughtful reading, warm-ups including Chi Gong, push hands , T'ai Chi walking and "the form". T'ai Chi is an on-going learning process and takes one or two sessions to experience chi flow and meditation in motion. Chi Gong, meaning energy accumulation, is an ancient Chinese moving meditation using repetitive motion in the breath. It focuses on the internal organs in a way that energizes the body, expels blocked energy and improves circulation and health. Some of the forms include Eight Brocades, Bone Marrow Cleansing, Hsing I, Soft Chi Gong, Spine Chi Gong, and Medical Chi Gong. These classes, held on Wednesdays, from 6-7:15 PM, help people to regain strength and agility and reduce stress and body tension, as well as blood pressure. Beth's students have noticed focused awareness and reduced anxiety; relief from migraines, stress and lower back pain; and improvement with breathing problems and balance disorders.
