The Friends Of Oakwood Cemetery - June Volunteers

237-2188

Help rejuvenate and restore Oakwood Cemetery to its original and historic beauty. Work days are scheduled for every Saturday in June from 9am to 1pm.

The Friends are a group of dedicated volunteers and supporters who formally organized in October of 1998. The purpose of The Friends is to rejuvenate and restore Oakwood Cemetery to its original and historic beauty and importance. It is an outdoor sculpture Garden and a living history museum of national significance.

What has been one to date?

Many volunteers have been working to cut the overgrown areas of the cemetery. Over 3,500 spring-flowering bulbs were planted in November which produced a beautiful array of color this Spring. A grant application was written to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for funding to help host a conference. The conference was held on April 17 with approximately 50 professionals in the field of architecture, preservation and history offering expertise on many aspects of the work that needs to be done in the future. The above items are but a small sampling of work that has been accomplished so far.

What you can do!

Would you like to become a Friend of Oakwood'? Are you retired, love to garden, a history buff or just have time on your hands? Here's how you can help. Work days are scheduled for every Saturday in June from 9am to 1pm. Meet in front of the Crematorium and sign in. Bring rakes, pruners (if you have them) and heavy gloves. Are you a computer wiz? We can use your help in documenting history and records. If you can help out PLEASE call Terry Page at 237-2188 or Claire Steiner at 279-1215.
