South Central Troy Neighborhood Association 270-7846 The South Central Troy Neighborhood Association is a group of interested neighbors dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life in our historic Troy neighborhood. The group formed in the early 1990's. Our general neighborhood area is between First and Hill Streets and Washington Street and the Canal. We meet the third Wednesday of the month (except December) at 7 PM in the Community Room at School 10 Apartments, Adams and Third Street. Volunteers distribute meeting announcements with an agenda each month to several hundred residences. Mayor Mark Pattison, attended our April 21st meeting. The mayor heard presentations on pressing neighborhood concerns - civil code enforcement, irresponsible landlords, and street maintenance and the proposed South Troy Bypass (truck route). The topics were among those discussed at several previous meetings and mentioned in responses to a questionnaire distributed to neighborhood residents by our group earlier in the vear. The mayor discussed each of the topics and other local issues with the twenty-five attendees. At past meetings neighbors met with members of the community policing unit, code enforcement officials, recreation bureau and public works department officials, the Public Safety Commissioner, the director of the new Troy Boy's & Girl's Club facility and our city council member Mike Mahr. In the past few years we coordinated alley cleanup, adopted the Canal Avenue Playground (Canal and Third Street) and organized major cleanups at the playground in spring and fall. Throughout the year neighbors regularly maintain the playground and pick up litter and cut the grass. Last year through our ongoing coordination with the city recreation department, new playground equipment was installed, several trees were planted, an additional light was installed and older equipment was repaired and repainted. A new fence will be installed this year. Our Earth Day project in April was a cleanup of our "southern gateway", Canal Avenue, in addition to a cleanup of the playground, Sixteen neighbors and friends participated. Patricelli's Deli, Sidelines Sports Pub, Freihofer's and Stewart's generously provided pizza, soft drinks, donuts, and ice tea and lemonade for the clean up crew. Last year we were pleased to receive a citation from the Rensselaer County Environmental Action for our efforts in the playground and shared first prize in the Victorian Stroll Window Display contest for Most Original Display. In May we distributed 300 copies of a handout to our neighbors describing several city ordinances relating to quality of life issues. We are presently working on materials to identify and describe our historic Troy neighborhood and will soon begin planning for another neighborhood community yard sale and block party at the Canal Avenue Playground in September. Last year's successful event included a bike rodeo and rides on a city fire truck for youngsters sponsored by the Community Policing Unit and our neighbor, the Osgood Fire Department, as well as pizza donated by Mahr's Place, and a bake sale. The event raised $600 for playground equipment and provided neighbors of all ages with the opportunity to meet, relax and enjoy the playground. We continue to encourage residents of the neighborhood, to become involved in finding solutions to common problems. We welcome new residents -- families, seniors, and singles -- into a neighborhood of well maintained homes and city amenities.
