Letters to the Editor - December 1999 Dear TUI, I was just wondering if maybe you might know who I could get in touch with to see if there will be any Class of 1979 reunions at Troy High School? Please let me know! Thanks! Sincerely, Kirk Van Ness
Dear TUI, I have been searching the Troy websites but can not find a listing of homes for sale. Does one exist for the Troy area? Thank you, Marcia Selsor Dear TUI, I was very interested in an old brewery called The Stanton Brewery, that was located in Troy in the 40's. Do you have any information on this brewery? There is an olden Ale bottle bottle that says: Internal Revenue Tax statement Since 1817 Lianton Olden Ale brewed and bottled at The Stanton Brewery Troy,NY. Bottle is green, embossed on shoulder Not to be refilled No deposit No return on the shoulder and is in good condition. If by chance you can help, or direct me to someone who can, it would be most appreciated. Sincerely, Susan Stanton Dear TUI, I am the Membership Coordinator for a nonprofit membership service organization based in Baltimore, Maryland called the League of Historic American Theatres. Our mission is to help people rescue, reuse, restore, renovate and successfully operate historic theatres throughout North America. I recently received calls from two different people requesting information about our organization because they were interested in the possible restoration and reuse of the Proctor's Theatre in Troy. The one gentleman was then living in Chicago and was about to move back to Troy, but he has since moved and I am not sure how to reach him. The other was an architect whose name I cannot now come up with and I'm not sure where she was located. Last week, one of our architect members phoned to see what I knew about this theatre project because he'd like to learn more about it. He apparently heard about the project at an Urban Land Institute seminar last month. Since I am unable to put him in touch with either of the two people who contacted me for League information, I thought I might be able to find out, with your help, who the architect can contact to get more information. A response would be greatly appreciated if there's any information you can share at all. Even a referral to someone at the city or any lead would be great. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. Colleen Eierman Dear TUI, I am a former resident of Troy, N.Y., but I am very concerned about the state of the city. I left Troy because there are absolutely no opportunities for personal growth. I joined the Navy and saw the world and I want to let you know that the city does not have to look the way it does. I personally think the city is dirty and lacking in community pride. I have noticed in recent trips that some things are being done for city beautification, but they are the wrong things. Bringing back the approach does not feed the hungry or provide shelter. The money the city is spending needs to go to fixing up the housing projects or getting rid of them and starting over. The old Hern apartments need to be torn down, they are an eyesore. I have lived places where the city has built low income town houses that are offered to the lower income residents, in an effort to increase community pride. The thinking is if the people own it then they will take better care of it. My family still resides in Troy, and last year I decided to have my wedding at St. Patricks Church. My new in laws and the many friends who were in attendance thought that the church was beautiful, but it was a shame that it was located in such a poor city. I work in a very technical field and I meet many people who attended RPI and think it's a wonderful school, but hated it because it was located in such an awful place. I don't know about you, but comments like these hurt and I would love to be proud of the place where I am from, but I cannot. Everytime I visit I hope the city will undergo a major reformation, I hate looking around and seeing all the delapitated buildings and depressed looking people. Things need to change. Because of things like RPI and the legend of Uncle Sam, Troy N.Y is actually a pretty popular place, but the impression that it gives to the rest of the world it pretty grim from what I have heard and seen so far. Thank You for taking the time to read this, and I'm sorry I could not have anything better to say. Sincerely, Marcy (Ellers) Swartzbaugh In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
