What new programs has your agency begun?

Sunnyside Center has introduced a new program aimed a making our youth aware of the church's teaching on social justice as well as putting the teaching into action. Below is a summary of the new program. This program wasa presented to Mary Harrison of the Office of Catechesis and Evangelization, Diocesan Youth Ministers, Catholic Central High School and Bishop Magin High School.

Sowers Of Justice Social Justice Program

"Charity will never be true charity until it takes justice into account...Let no one attempt with small gifts of charity to exempt themselves from the great duties imposed by justice." Pope John XXIII, Peace on Earth, 1963

Sowers of Justice is a community action program designed for young adults, allowing them to put social justice into action in order to effect change within the community. Students in this program will be trained at Sunnyside Center, Inc. in areas of social action, child development, teaching techniques followed by interships within the Sunnyside Center's programs. Students successfully completing the training will be offered paid summer positions at the Center. Students who are interested in this program will be asked to attend a day long retreat on social justice. Students who are further interested will be interviewed for possible entry into the program.

A Time For Justice

On November 11, Sunnyside Center facilitated a retreat as an introduction to the ministry of Social Justice. This time of reflection was attended by 20 youth and adult from the diocese. The liturgy was celebrate with Rev. John Medwid, pastor of St. Anthony's Church in Schenectady.

Mentoring Grant Received

Sunnyside Center, Inc. has been awarded a grant from the city of Troy to develop the Youth Connections Mentoring Program . Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship over a prolonged period of time between a youth and an adult. The mentor provides consistent support, guidance, and concrete assistance to help the younger person gain the skills and confidence to be responsible for his/ her own future.

Social Justice Activities Established For Youth Ministry Programs

Sunnyside Center is working with various youth ministry groups in parishes and service clubs at local Catholic high schools getting youth involved in service, including:

Christmas Party

Date: Monday, December 20, 1999 3 - 5 pm

Number of children to be served: 100, Ages 3 - 12

We need help providing cookies and juice and help making ornaments for each child to decorate tree

Adopt a Family or Child for Christmas

Date: Monday, December 20, 1999 3 - 5 pm

Number of children served : 100 ages 3 - 12

Number of families served: 100

Type of help needed:

Seek donated items for children, family, Wrap gifts and deliver to Sunnyside Center

New Millennium Party

Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2000 3 - 5 pm

Number of children served: 100 ages 3 - 12

Type of help needed: Plan activities, Make party favors, Provide snacks

Valentine's Party

Date: Monday, February 14, 2000 3 - 5 pm

Number of children served: 100 ages 3 - 12

Type of help needed: Plan activities, Make party favors, Make Valentine Day cards for each child, Provide snacks
