Funeral March for an Historic Building

Russell Ziemba - 272-1539

Residents Held a Funeral to Draw Attention to the Loss of Historic Buildings, including the Water Commissioner's House, at the corner of 123rd Street and 2nd Avenue

The Funeral took place at 12:00 Noon, Thursday February 10, 2000.

The newly formed historic preservation group named Historic Action Network conducted the funeral march in honor of the Water Commissioner's House in Lansingburgh. This 120-year-old house and large yard, located on the banks of the Hudson River, was in use until recently and was in excellent condition. It is being torn down to make way for a new Strip Mall.

The destruction of this historic house is another great loss to our City's heritage.

Historic Action Network is an assembly of concerned citizens, residents of Troy, who are heartsick at the steady and irresponsible extermination of our City's greatest asset - our handsome, old and reuseable buildings. While we are losing the Water Commissioner's House, we plan to use the situation to draw attention to the next victim of this demolition derby; - The Freihofer Bakery Complex (which includes the 105-year-old Riverside Clubhouse).

Thursday February 10th at 7:00pm, the Planning Commission of Troy held a Council meeting ruling in favor of Eckerd's proposal to tear down Freihofer's and the Riverside Club, and build a tasteless, monotonous drugstore surrounded by parking lot. We strongly encourage citizens to speak against the demolition of these and other historic buildings.
